Cosmic Swamp

Story

Cosmic Swamp is a journey to a distant planet that has been destroyed by an asteroid. A new evolutionary pathway has been forged, as a result of the destruction. The asteroid is a chunk of planet earth, and has brought with it organisms and materials from our home planet.

Hybrid creatures, bizarre yet familiar formations and a strange new world.

Process

ANIMATION :

I filmed flowers and materials like rubber toys in slow motion with a hair dryer for subtle movement. Then, I used keying to remove the backgrounds and created a backdrop animation for the installation.

Three animations were projected onto the walls, created using Adobe After Effects and footage shot using a green screen.

INSTALLATION :

Using discarded materials such as plastic bottles, bubble wrap, used toys and broken crystals, I created an immersive environment that spans 3m x 3m.

With my asteroid light sculpture suspended from the roof, and floor formations which I call “stalagmites”, the room feels otherworldly and highly engages visitors.

COSTUME :

Giant bugs are my specialty; I’ve completed four insect costumes, receiving great responses on social media and during roaming performances.

My costume design work reflects on adaptation and natural cycles, embodying creatures that undergo dramatic transformations, like that of caterpillars to butterflies.

Backdrop Animation

Made using Adobe After Effects with real flowers and craft materials such as rubber toys, crystals and beads.

The Asteroid

My sculptures are translucent, vibrant glowing mounds of texture and colour.
